ABOUT THE MARATHON The VIC Radio 50 Hour Marathon had humble beginnings. In the early 1980s, the VIC staff organized an annual bowling party intended to foster station unity. In 1986, station staff members sought pledges from family and friends for the number of frames played. Approximately $40.00 was raised, which was turned over to the Greater Ithaca Activities Center.
In 1987, student station manager Janet Snyder proposed a 50 Hour Marathon, during which two DJs would stay on the air for over two full days with no breaks and no sleep to raise money for a local non-profit.
Since then, our fundraising marathon has grown to include two DJs and two Street Team members who audition to stay up for 50 consecutive hours on air, through a weekend packed full of events and interviews. Each hour within the Marathon is sponsored by local businesses, campus organizations, and individuals, with all proceeds going to a worthy cause within Ithaca, New York.
